Octopus Charge vs Ohme Home Pro — which charger for tariff-API homes?

By 7 min read

Octopus Charge and Ohme Home Pro are two 7.4 kW Type 2 smart wallboxes in our catalogue. Both rows are marked octopus-compatible. They are not the same box. “An Octopus charger” or “an Ohme” is not a model name.

Most UK houses are single-phase, so 7.4 kW is the usual driveway rating either way. The useful split is tethered-only versus tethered-or-socket, the printed tariff-API line, and whether load balancing and OCPP are marked.

We do not rank “which is better”. Both catalogue From figures include standard installation in the manufacturer line. That is not a fitted total for every driveway, and it is not a reason to treat the printed spread as a hardware saving.

What the catalogue actually says

Both rows, last verified 19 October 2026:

The Home Pro tagline in our copy is an app-first tethered charger with a 5 m Type 2 lead and Octopus tariff sync. The Octopus Charge tagline is an Octopus-designed wallbox with app scheduling, Eco solar mode, and Intelligent Octopus Go integration, with standard installation included. Those are catalogue lines, not a lab test and not a ranking of brands.

Do not subtract £999 from £1,029 or £1,129 and call that the difference between the two units. Both figures include standard installation. Home Pro is one tethered SKU. Octopus Charge prints two SKUs. We do not say what that package covers on your driveway.

Tethered 5 m versus a socket is the driveway

Home Pro is tethered only with a printed 5 m lead. Octopus Charge is marked both: a socketed SKU and a tethered SKU with a printed 5 m lead. Tethered vs untethered is whether the lead lives on the wallbox, or you bring your own Type 2 cable. 5 m vs 7.5 m is that printed length against the parking bay.

A 5 m tethered lead is not the install run from the consumer unit. Ordering either row does not move the board closer to the bay. The socketed Octopus Charge does not include a lead in our data; you still need a matching Type 2 cable that reaches the inlet.

If you want a socket option, Octopus Charge is the row marked both. Home Pro is not. The socketed Ohme is a different SKU: Ohme ePod. Head-to-head on the two Ohme rows: Home Pro vs ePod.

The tariff-API lines are not identical

Both rows are marked octopus-compatible. That flag is not unique to either brand. On the current snapshot, 4 of 54 current rows carry it: Home Pro, Ohme ePod, Indra Smart Pro, and Octopus Charge. See smart energy tariffs.

The tariff-API line we print is Octopus on Home Pro and Intelligent Octopus Go on Octopus Charge. Those are catalogue lines. They are not the supplier’s live charger list. Check the tariff with the supplier before you treat either SKU as approved.

Two further current rows list Intelligent Octopus Go under tariff APIs without the octopus-compatible feature flag: Andersen Quartz (catalogue From £695) and Hypervolt Home 3 Pro (no From figure in our data). A named tariff-API line is still not Octopus’s live list.

An app schedule can still put a session into an off-peak window if you set it. That is already true of every current catalogue row — all 54 of 54 are marked app. A named tariff-API line is a different claim.

A pence-per-kWh rate or a payback in months are not quoted here.

Head-to-head on Home Pro versus Zappi: Ohme Home Pro vs MyEnergi Zappi. Head-to-head on Home Pro versus Solo 3: Pod Point vs Ohme.

Solar is marked on both; load balancing and OCPP are not

Both rows are marked solar. A solar mark means surplus-PV / Eco modes when the installer fits the clamps and you ask for those settings. It is not a grant checkbox, not an MCS certificate, and not an export-tariff product. On the current snapshot, 43 of 54 current rows are marked solar. Filter Solar diversion on the catalogue rather than treating either brand as the surplus-PV row. EV chargers and solar panels is the matching page.

Home Pro is marked load balancing. Octopus Charge is not. Load balancing is a supply-limit feature, not surplus-PV and not a tariff API. On the current snapshot, 47 of 54 current rows are marked. The seven that are not: Octopus Charge, Pod Point Solo 3, MyEnergi Zappi, the untethered Zappi, Andersen A2, Tesla Wall Connector, and Charge Amps Halo. See load balancing on a UK domestic supply.

Home Pro is marked OCPP. Octopus Charge is not. Losing OCPP is not the same as losing the legal minimum smart functions. New private wallboxes sold in Great Britain still have to be smart — see smart vs dumb.

Home Pro prints IP55. Octopus Charge has no IP rating in our data. An IP rating is weather sealing on that SKU, not a planning rule and not a reason to treat Octopus Charge as indoor-only. We do not say that every outdoor bay “needs IP55”.

What a useful quote should name

Ask for the exact catalogue model. Home Pro is the tethered 5 m Ohme. Octopus Charge is the Octopus Energy row with an untethered SKU and a tethered 5 m SKU. Then whether it is the attached lead or your own Type 2 cable, whether CT clamps or tariff / app setup are included if you asked for those modes, the cable run they priced, whether consumer-unit work is included or excluded, certification, DNO notification, and VAT. What to expect from the quote is the list.

Both From figures include standard installation in the manufacturer line. That is still not a fitted total for every driveway. A typical UK fitted price, or a “fair spread” between these two SKUs, is not quoted here.

How it works is the matching path. You book and pay the electrician. Compare itemised lines if more than one opted-in installer replies. There is no ChargerFit SLA that you will get three quotes.

Grants are a separate check

A tariff-API wallbox is not automatically grant-eligible, and a solar-marked wallbox is not a solar grant. From 1 April 2026 the live GOV.UK chargepoint schemes pay up to £500 per socket (75% of the cost, capped at £500). Funding is confirmed until 31 March 2027. See current GOV.UK rules and who still qualifies.

Do not have the charger installed until OZEV has confirmed you are eligible. Both of these rows are marked OZEV residential-eligible on the 19 October 2026 snapshot. A row in our catalogue is not a grant approval.
