Pod Point vs Ohme — which home EV charger is better?

By Alex 6 min read

Both the Pod Point Solo 3 and the Ohme Home Pro are 7.4 kW Type 2 smart wallboxes in our catalogue. On Pod Point’s site, Solo 3 is untethered from £999 and tethered from £1,049. That page does not include installation in those prices. Installation terms are quoted by Pod Point. Home Pro is From £999 including standard installation. Do not treat the two £999 figures as the same kind of price.

Solo 3 is tethered-or-socket (“both”). The tethered Solo 3 has a printed 6.5 m cable. Home Pro is tethered only, with a printed 5 m lead. The catalogue title is Ohme Home Pro Tethered.

Both rows are marked solar and app. Home Pro is also marked load balancing, OCPP, and octopus-compatible. Solo 3 is not. We do not rank “which is better”. A payback from the printed figures is not quoted here.

What the catalogue actually says

The Solo 3 tagline in our copy is the default UK charger, widely stocked, partnered with Tesco for a public network. The Home Pro tagline is an app-first tethered charger with a 5 m Type 2 lead and Octopus tariff sync. Those are catalogue lines, not a lab test and not a ranking.

Do not subtract the Solo 3 figures from Home Pro’s £999 and call that a like-for-like saving. Home Pro’s figure includes standard installation. The Solo 3 figures do not. Installation terms for Solo 3 are quoted by Pod Point.

Tariff APIs are not an app timer

If you want the octopus-compatible flag, Home Pro is the Ohme row this page compares with the Solo 3. It is not the only octopus-compatible catalogue row. On the current snapshot, 4 of 52 current rows carry it: Home Pro, Ohme ePod, Indra Smart Pro, and Octopus Charge. Andersen Quartz and Hypervolt Home 3 Pro list Intelligent Octopus Go under tariff APIs without that feature flag. See smart energy tariffs. Head-to-head on the two Ohme SKUs: Home Pro vs ePod.

The Solo 3 is marked app. An app schedule can still put a session into an off-peak window if you set it. That is already true of every current catalogue row — all 52 of 52 are marked app. A named tariff-API line is a different claim.

A catalogue flag is not Octopus’s live charger list. Check the tariff with the supplier. A pence-per-kWh rate or a payback in months are not quoted here.

Solar is marked on both

Both of these rows are marked solar. A solar mark means surplus-PV / Eco modes when the installer fits the clamps and you ask for those settings. It is not a grant checkbox, not an MCS certificate, and not an export-tariff product. On the current snapshot, 41 of 52 current rows are marked solar. Filter Solar diversion on the catalogue rather than treating either brand as the surplus-PV pick. EV chargers and solar panels is the matching page. Head-to-head on Home Pro vs Zappi: Ohme Home Pro vs MyEnergi Zappi. Head-to-head on Zappi and Hypervolt: Zappi vs Hypervolt.

Ohme ePod is a different Ohme row (last verified 12 October 2026): From £949 including standard installation, 7.4 kW, untethered only, app, solar, load balancing, OCPP, octopus-compatible, tariff APIs: Octopus, OVO, British Gas, IP54, 3-year warranty, OZEV residential-eligible. It is the compact socketed Ohme. Home Pro is the tethered 5 m row. Do not treat “Ohme” as one SKU.

OCPP and load balancing are extras on Home Pro

Home Pro is marked OCPP. Solo 3 is not. Losing OCPP is not the same as losing the legal minimum smart functions. New private wallboxes sold in Great Britain still have to be smart — see smart vs dumb.

Home Pro is marked load balancing. Solo 3 is not. Load balancing is a supply-limit feature, not surplus-PV and not a tariff API. On the current snapshot, 46 of 52 current rows are marked. See load balancing on a UK domestic supply.

Home Pro prints IP55. Solo 3 has no IP rating in our data. An IP rating is weather sealing on that SKU, not a planning rule and not a reason to treat Solo 3 as indoor-only.

What a useful quote should name

Ask for the exact catalogue model — “an Ohme” or “a Pod Point” is not enough, because ePod is a different box from Home Pro. Home Pro is the tethered 5 m Ohme row; the socketed Ohme is ePod. Solo 3 is tethered-or-socket, so say which version you mean. The tethered Solo 3 prints a 6.5 m cable. Then the cable run they priced, whether consumer-unit work is included or excluded, whether CT clamps or tariff / app setup are included if you asked for those modes, certification, DNO notification, and VAT. The printed leads are the attached cable, not the run from the consumer unit. What to expect from the quote is the list.

Home Pro’s From figure includes standard installation. The Solo 3 figures do not; installation terms are quoted by Pod Point. Neither line is a fitted total for every driveway. A typical UK fitted price, or a “fair spread” between these two brands, is not quoted here.

How it works is the matching path. You book and pay the electrician. Compare itemised lines if more than one opted-in installer replies. There is no ChargerFit SLA that you will get three quotes.

Grants are a separate check

A tariff-API wallbox is not automatically grant-eligible, and a solar-marked wallbox is not a solar grant. From 1 April 2026 the live GOV.UK chargepoint schemes pay up to £500 per socket. Funding is confirmed until 31 March 2027. See current GOV.UK rules and who still qualifies.

Do not have the charger installed until OZEV has confirmed you are eligible. Both of these rows are marked OZEV residential-eligible on the 12 October 2026 snapshot. A row in our catalogue is not a grant approval.
