EV chargers and smart energy tariffs — Intelligent Octopus and beyond
A smart wallbox can be scheduled into an off-peak window. That is a product feature, not a measured bill saving. Ohme Home Pro is one octopus-compatible row. It is not the whole list. On the current catalogue snapshot, 4 of 54 current rows are marked octopus-compatible: Ohme Home Pro, Ohme ePod, Indra Smart Pro, and Octopus Charge. Two further rows list Intelligent Octopus Go under tariff APIs without that feature flag: Andersen Quartz and Hypervolt Home 3 Pro. Head-to-head on Home Pro versus Octopus Charge: Octopus Charge vs Ohme Home Pro.
A 60–80% saving is not a measured result on this page. A catalogue flag is not Octopus’s live compatibility list. Check the tariff’s charger list with the supplier.
Get a quote. We pass the enquiry to opted-in OZEV-authorised electricians. We do not promise a number of quotes, a reply time, or a public installer list.
Other tariff rows beside Ohme Home Pro
The original row is still marked octopus-compatible: Ohme Home Pro (From £999 including standard installation, 7.4 kW, tariff APIs: Octopus, last verified 19 October 2026). It is marked solar. Head-to-head with Pod Point: Pod Point vs Ohme. Head-to-head with Zappi: Ohme Home Pro vs MyEnergi Zappi. Head-to-head with Octopus Charge: Octopus Charge vs Ohme Home Pro.
The same snapshot also marks octopus-compatible on:
- Ohme ePod — From £949 including standard installation, 7.4 kW, untethered, load balancing, OCPP. Tariff APIs: Octopus, OVO, British Gas. Marked solar.
- Indra Smart Pro — From £899 including standard installation, 7.4 kW, untethered, load balancing, OCPP. Tariff APIs: Octopus, OVO, EDF, E.ON. Marked solar.
- Octopus Charge — From £1,029 untethered, £1,129 tethered (5 m), including standard installation, 7.4 kW, tethered-or-socket. Tariff APIs: Intelligent Octopus Go. Marked solar. Not marked load balancing or OCPP.
Two current rows list Intelligent Octopus Go under tariff APIs without the octopus-compatible feature flag:
- Andersen Quartz — catalogue From £695, 7.4 kW. Tariff APIs: Andersen app, Intelligent Octopus Go. Marked solar. 7-year warranty in our data.
- Hypervolt Home 3 Pro — no From figure in our data, 7.4 kW, tethered, load balancing. Tariff APIs: Hypervolt app, Intelligent Octopus Go. Marked solar. Not OCPP in our data.
Home Pro, ePod, Indra Smart Pro, and Octopus Charge print including standard installation. Quartz’s From figure is a hardware RRP. Home 3 Pro has no printed price. None of those is a fitted total for every driveway. Pence-per-kWh rate, a “tariff package” band, or a payback in years are not quoted here.
Tariff sync is not surplus-PV
Off-peak scheduling and surplus-PV / Eco modes are different flags. EV chargers and solar panels is the matching page for solar diversion. Home Pro, ePod, Indra Smart Pro, and Octopus Charge are marked both octopus-compatible and solar on this snapshot.
A solar-marked wallbox is not automatically the tariff-API row, and a tariff-API row is not automatically solar. Ask for the flag you actually want.
New private wallboxes sold in Great Britain still have to be smart. That is a legal floor, not a tariff integration. See smart vs dumb and what a home wallbox must do.
An app schedule is not the same as a tariff API
Most current catalogue rows have an app. An app timer can still put the session into an off-peak window if you set it. That is not the same as the octopus-compatible flag or a tariff-API line that names Octopus.
Pod Point Solo 3 is marked app, not octopus-compatible, and has no tariff-API line in our data. MyEnergi Zappi and Hypervolt Home 3 are solar rows; they are not the octopus-compatible set.
We do not print a ranked “best Intelligent Octopus charger”. The supplier’s live list is the one that matters for that tariff. Catalogue flags can lag.
What should be on the quote
If you want off-peak or tariff-linked charging, say so. Ask the electrician to name:
- the exact catalogue model (not “an Octopus unit”)
- whether app pairing or tariff setup is included
- the cable run from the consumer unit to the parking place
- whether consumer-unit work is included or excluded
App setup adds time on site if you asked for it. That should be a line, not a surprise.
How it works is the matching path. You book and pay the electrician. Compare itemised lines if more than one opted-in installer replies. There is no ChargerFit SLA that you will get three quotes.
Grants are a separate check
A tariff-API wallbox is not automatically grant-eligible, and a grant is not a cheap-rate tariff. From 1 April 2026 the live GOV.UK chargepoint schemes pay up to £500 per socket (75% of the cost, capped at £500). Funding is confirmed until 31 March 2027. See current GOV.UK rules and who still qualifies.
Do not have the charger installed until OZEV has confirmed you are eligible. A row in our catalogue is not automatically grant-eligible.
