From slow 3-pin trickle chargers to ultra-rapid 350 kW DC units. A complete plain-English guide to every type of EV charger available in the UK — and which one is right for your home.
A charger's speed is measured in kilowatts (kW). Higher kW = faster charge. Here's every speed tier you'll encounter in the UK, and where each one fits. Empty-to-full time depends on pack size and the car's onboard limit — we do not publish a clock for every model.
A standard household plug socket with a charging cable. Last-resort only — slow, inefficient, and not designed for repeated EV use.
The standard UK home wallbox. Single-phase 32 A. Overnight is enough for most UK commuting. We do not publish empty-to-full hours.
Three-phase 32 A. A higher-rated wallbox than a typical single-phase 7.4 kW unit, but it needs a three-phase supply — uncommon in UK homes, standard in commercial buildings.
Direct-current public chargers found at motorway services and supermarkets. Skips your car's onboard converter, charging the battery directly.
Tesla Supercharger V3, Ionity and InstaVolt sites. Some hardware is rated up to 350 kW. What you get depends on the car and the charge curve — we do not publish a miles-per-hour figure.
There are five connector types you'll see in the UK. New UK EVs use Type 2 for AC and CCS for DC rapid. Older Leafs and Outlanders are the usual Type 1 / CHAdeMO exceptions. We do not publish a market-share figure.
The original North American AC standard. Single-phase only — max 7.4 kW. You'll find it on a small number of older UK EVs and imported American models.
The UK and EU standard for AC charging. Used by virtually every modern EV — Tesla (UK), BMW, VW, Hyundai, Polestar, Kia, MG, Renault, Audi, Mercedes EQ and more.
"Combined Charging System" — adds two big DC pins below a Type 2. The universal rapid-charge standard for new EVs across Europe and increasingly worldwide.
Japanese rapid-charge standard. Once the king of DC, now being phased out in Europe in favour of CCS. Still seen on older Leafs and Outlanders.
Tesla's proprietary connector for the Supercharger network. In Europe, all Teslas since 2018 use Type 2 / CCS — so this is mostly a US-market issue.
Beyond raw kW, modern UK chargers differ in how they integrate with your home, your tariff, and your car. These six features are the ones worth paying attention to.
Cable permanently attached to the unit. Walk up, plug in, charge. No fumbling for a cable in the boot. Most popular for everyday convenience.
Socket only, no attached cable. Cleaner look on the wall and you can swap cables for different connector types. Useful if you have multiple EVs.
App-controlled. Schedule charging during off-peak energy hours (e.g. Octopus Go's overnight window). We do not publish a typical pence-per-mile saving versus petrol.
Diverts excess PV power to your car instead of exporting it. Brands like MyEnergi Zappi and Hypervolt do this natively. Effectively free fuel from sunshine.
A catalogue flag that can cap how much current the wallbox draws so the house supply is not asked for more than it can give. 37 of 41 current rows are marked. It is not a rule that every home needs it. When you might want it →
No wall nearby? A freestanding pedestal puts your charger exactly where you need it. Suits driveways far from the house, listed buildings and two-car households. Full guide →
