EV charger installation checklist — everything you need before the engineer arrives
Before you book: photos of the consumer unit and the parking place, written consent if you rent or lease, and OZEV’s eligibility email if you are using a grant. On the day: access to the board and the bay, the agreed model, the cable route they quoted, and the home Wi-Fi name and password if you want the app paired while they are there.
This is the before-you-book list. The hour-by-hour electrical sequence lives in what actually happens on install day. Clearing the two spaces is how to prepare the home. A typical fitted price or a visit length are not quoted here.
Get a quote. We pass the enquiry to opted-in OZEV-authorised electricians. We do not promise a number of quotes, a reply time, or a public installer list.
Before you send the form
A first look usually needs two photographs and a postcode. What to expect from the quote is the lines they should write back.
- A photo of the consumer unit with the cover off. The electrician is looking at spare ways, the meter tails, and whether the board is safe to add a dedicated circuit. Whether the fuse box needs work is their survey, not a ChargerFit checklist of “always replace if it looks like X”.
- A photo of where the car parks, including the wall or post they would mount on. A private wallbox needs private property the cable can reach. No driveway, a flat, or a terrace with only an on-street bay is a different job.
- The car, if you already know it, and whether the inlet is Type 1 or Type 2. Catalogue wallboxes are Type 2.
- A catalogue model, if you already picked one. Name the exact SKU. Andersen A2 is listed on ChargerFit but is not marked residential-eligible.
How the enquiry path works is matching only. What happens after you submit is the post-submit sequence. We do not take a deposit or run escrow.
Written consent and grants, before anyone books a date
Permission is not one form:
- If you rent, you need the landlord’s written consent and a parking place the cable can reach.
- If you are a leaseholder, you need whoever controls the parking and the building.
- A listed building is outside England permitted development. That sits with the local planning authority.
If you want a grant, apply on GOV.UK first. Do not have the charger installed until OZEV has confirmed you are eligible. See who still qualifies. A grant eligibility email is not a certificate and not a DNO notice.
On the morning they arrive
What to prepare on install day is the shorter access note. Have these ready:
- Clear access to the consumer unit and the parking bay. If the quote included a garage wall, a driveway trench, or an outbuilding, leave that route walkable.
- The agreed model. Most current catalogue rows are 7.0–7.4 kW Type 2. Two current rows are listed at 22 kW and need three-phase. Tethered units arrive with a lead attached. Untethered units need your own Type 2 lead. Several rows are marked “both”. Confirm which you ordered — tethered vs untethered.
- The cable route they quoted. On the day they check that quote against the real wall and the meter tails. If the board or supply is not safe, they should stop. That is an OZEV installer rule, not a ChargerFit timetable.
- Home Wi-Fi name and password, if you want pairing done while they are there. Every current catalogue row is marked app (41 of 41). Follow that SKU’s app, not a generic blog sequence. Setting up the charger app on install day is that page.
We do not promise the job finishes in half a day. A clean garage-wall run is a short visit. A buried cable, a board upgrade, or surplus-PV clamps on a solar-marked wallbox is not.
Before they leave
Ask for the BS 7671 certificate and confirmation that DNO notification has been or will be filed. A green LED is not that paperwork. DNO notification is connect-and-notify versus apply-to-connect. That is their call.
They should leave you able to open the manufacturer app and see a live session, not a blank pairing screen. If pairing is outstanding, they should say so before they pack up.
Payment and the date are between you and the installer. We do not issue a ChargerFit workmanship warranty.
Grants in 2026
From 1 April 2026 the live GOV.UK chargepoint schemes pay up to £500 per socket (75% of the cost, capped at £500). Funding is confirmed until 31 March 2027. See current GOV.UK rules.
You may qualify if you rent, own and live in a flat with private off-street parking, are a residential landlord, or only have on-street parking and are fitting a cross-pavement solution. Owner-occupiers in houses with a driveway are not on those home schemes.
A grant is not a discount we apply. Eligible customers apply on GOV.UK. The installer claims after that notice.
What this list is not
- A typical fitted price, a visit length, or a “most jobs finish by lunch”
- A promise of three quotes, a same-day callback, or a public installer list
- A grant approval, a planning decision, or a DNO filing we do for you
- A button-hold pairing sequence that fits every SKU
How to get a charger installed at home is the wider path. If you have not booked anyone yet, start at get a quote. Compare itemised lines if more than one opted-in installer replies. There is no ChargerFit SLA that you will get three quotes.
