EV charger installation cost for a detached house
A detached house often means a longer run to a garage or a side wall. That can cost more than a short garage-wall job. We still do not publish a detached-house average in pounds.
Jobs are not priced here by the decade the house was built, or by a printed metre count.
Get a quote. We pass the enquiry to opted-in OZEV-authorised electricians. We do not promise a number of quotes, a reply time, or a public installer list.
What actually moves the figure
What you pay is still the unit, the dedicated circuit, any consumer-unit work, certification, and VAT. How much an install costs is itemised by the electrician, not by ChargerFit.
On a detached house the route is what usually changes the job:
- An attached garage or a parking place next to the board can be a short surface run.
- A side wall, a distant driveway bay, or a detached garage / outbuilding is a different route — often longer, sometimes buried.
- The consumer unit may sit in a utility room, under the stairs, or in the garage, not next to where the car parks.
How far the charger sits from the fuse box is a design question, not a printed metre limit. We do not publish a 10 m / 20 m / 25 m cost ladder. A terrace is a different parking problem if the only bay is on-street. It is not automatically cheaper than a detached house.
Whether the fuse box needs work is the electrician’s survey. A detached house does not automatically need a new board, and a modern-looking house does not automatically have a spare way for a 32 A circuit.
Era bands, “typical detached” totals, or a pounds add-on for a long run are not quoted here. Ask for those lines on the quote.
What a useful quote should name
A vague “7 kW unit, subject to survey” hides the extras. What to expect from the quote is the list of lines to ask for: the exact model, the cable run they priced (surface, cavity, or buried) and the route they assumed, protective devices, whether consumer-unit work is included or excluded, certification, DNO notification, VAT, and anything they will not do.
A photo of the consumer unit with the cover off, and a photo of where the car parks, is usually enough for a first look at that run. They should still confirm it on the day against the real wall.
Compare itemised lines if more than one opted-in installer replies. There is no ChargerFit SLA that you will get three quotes.
Catalogue RRP is not the fitted total
If you already picked a wallbox from the catalogue, say so. Catalogue From figures are hardware RRP, not a fitted total. The electrician still prices the circuit, the route, and any board work.
Most current catalogue rows are 7.0–7.4 kW. A 22 kW unit needs a three-phase supply most UK houses do not have — see 7 kW vs 22 kW. A t-phase upgrade cost for larger detached plots is not quoted here.
Listed and new-build detached
Listed-building consent may be required for the unit and the cable route. That sits with the local planning authority, not with ChargerFit. We do not promise 8-week approvals or “refusals are rare”. Do I need permission? is the matching page.
New-build homes in England have needed chargepoint provision on many plots since June 2022 (Approved Document S). If the developer left a supply but no unit, an electrician can often finish the job. If they left nothing, it is a normal dedicated-circuit install. We do not quote developer spec as a ChargerFit product.
Grants are not a detached-house discount
From 1 April 2026 the live GOV.UK chargepoint schemes pay up to £500 per socket (75% of the cost, capped at £500). Funding is confirmed until 31 March 2027. See current GOV.UK rules.
You may qualify if you rent, own and live in a flat with private off-street parking, are a residential landlord, or only have on-street parking and are fitting a cross-pavement solution. Owner-occupiers in houses with a driveway are not on those home schemes.
A grant is a GOV.UK process, not a line we deduct from a typical detached total — and we do not publish that total. See who still qualifies. Do not have the charger installed until OZEV has confirmed you are eligible.
What this means when you send the form
Send the two photos. Name the parking place (house wall, attached garage, or a separate building). Name a catalogue model if you already picked one.
How it works is the matching path. You book and pay the electrician. No deposit, no escrow, no promised reply time.
